A Notary Public is an ancient office with many citations throughout Maine statutes. The primary duty is to formally witness transactions involving paper documents. Maine Notaries, like those in Florida and South Carolina, can officiate at weddings. But there is no reciprocity with other states -- this means that out-of-state Notaries or Justices of the Peace cannot obtain permission to officiate at marriages in Maine. Only Maine adult residents can become and function as Maine Notaries Public.

The office of Justice of the Peace was merged into that of Notary Public between 1981 and 1988. The old-fashioned Justice of the Peace, who hung out a shingle and married people and performed minor judicial duties, no longer exists in Maine. The duties that formerly were attached to this office were transferred to that of Notary Public; the transfer concluded in 1988. That's why Maine Notaries can officiate at marriages and perform certain other duties that would not be allowed in many other states for their Notaries Public.

The Entertainer, Jon Scott, holds a valid commission as a Maine Notary Public, and has married dozens of people over the years, and can solemnize any wedding held within the jurisdiction of Maine's sixteen counties.

The first request for notary services to be added as part of the wedding package occurred totally by accident, a client, who had already contracted with us for her wedding entertainment, had decided to have her wedding solemnized by a notary public, but had not told us about this important decision. She went to the Secretary of States on-line listings of Maine Notaries Public and located my name on the public list, then called me up to ask how much additional money we would charge her to officiate her wedding service.

This made me realize that many of our clients were having a Notary Public solemnize their weddings unaware that I am a Notary Public. Many times we would be there, just waiting for another Notary Public to be done. As it is our mission statement to seek out the things that enhance the value of what Trust The Entertainer can do for it's clients, we told the interested client there would be NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE to act as the Notary for her wedding. She had a beautiful outdoor wedding set under a gazebo and an excellent reception followed under a huge tent.
